Strictly week 11 songs and dances revealed

  • Caroline and Pasha will be performing the Argentine Tango to the Traditional Version of ‘La Cumparsita’.
  • Frankie and Kevin will be performing the Salsa to the Freemasons’ Remix of ‘Work’ by Kelly Rowland.
  • Simon and Kristina will be performing the American Smooth to ‘Heartache Tonight’ by Michael Buble.
  • Mark and Karen will be performing the Foxtrot to ‘L-O-V-E’ by Nat King Cole.
  • Jake and Janette will be performing the Charleston to ‘Entry of the Gladiators’ by Ken Griffin’s Circus Band.
  • Pixie and Trent will be performing the Cha Cha to the Glee Cast version of ‘Love Shack’.
Reaction: Well Caroline has definitely got the best tune there. A traditional piece of tango music. Not that keen on the American Smooth music, it’s danceable but not very Hollywood. Just a side note, although Simon and Kristina are dancing to the Michael Bublé version of the song, it is by The Eagles. I get a bit miffed over original artists not getting credited for the songs. Likewise, Love Shack is by the B-52s, although Pixie and Trent are dancing to the Glee cast version. Their music should be O.K. for a cha cha. Mark and Karen’s Foxtrot music is fine. I’d not heard of Frankie’s music but a quick check on the net and it seems o.k.
The short straw has again been drawn by Jake. The music is known for being used in circuses, so they are keeping with the circus theme, as mentioned by Janette on It Takes Two. I hope they keep those inevitable backing dancers out of the way! He’s bound to be dressed as a circus act. My money is on a “strong man” carrying fake dumbells and sporting an handlebar moustache.
It’s not suitable for a Charleston so he could be in trouble this week.

Strictly week 10 songs and dances revealed

The Around the World songs and dances have been revealed as follows

  • Caroline and Pasha will be performing the Charleston to They Might Be Giant’s version of ‘Istanbul not Constantinople’ (TURKEY)
  • Frankie and Kevin will be performing the Jive to ‘Surfin’ USA’ by The Beach Boys. (USA)
  • Jake and Janette will be performing the Argentine Tango to ‘Zorba The Greek’. (GREECE)
  • Mark and Karen will be performing the Salsa to ‘Viva Las Vegas’ by Elvis Presley. (USA)
  • Pixie and Trent will be performing the Viennese Waltz to ‘Tulips From Amsterdam’ by Max Bygraves.(NETHERLANDS)
  • Simon and Kristina will be performing the Waltz to ‘Edelweiss’ from The Sound of Music. (AUSTRIA)
  • Sunetra and Brendan will be performing the Rumba to Michael Bolton’s version of ‘Girl From Ipanema’. (BRAZIL)
Reaction: When this theme was announced I wasn’t keen and this selection is pretty lame. There’s not a single one I like here. Two selections for USA I see. Couldn’t they think of another country then? “Edelweiss” for Austria is poor. Considering that “The Waltz king” Johann Strauss II was Austrian, couldn’t they have picked one of his many compositions for a Viennese waltz? Chopin’s Nocturne Op 9 No 2 would have been lovely for a Waltz too. In fact, they could have used this theme to use a lot of classical composers. As for America, there is a whole host of American songbook composers who could have been used.
A massive chance missed here. How glorious it could have been.

Strictly week 9 songs and dances revealed

Caroline and Pasha will be dancing the American Smooth to Robbie Williams’ version of ‘Mack the Knife’.
Frankie and Kevin will perform the Viennese Waltz to Tom Jones’ ‘What’s new Pussycat?’.
Jake and Janette will be dancing the Samba to the ‘Macarena’ by Los Del Rio.
Mark and Karen will Tango to OneRepublic’s ‘Love Runs Out’.
Pixie and Trent are going to Charleston to ‘Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend’ as sung by Nicole Kidman in the film ‘Moulin Rouge’.
Simon and Kristina will Salsa to ‘Let’s Hear It For The Boy’ by Deniece Williams.
Steve and Ola are Jiving to Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers version of ‘Little Bitty Pretty One’.
Sunetra and Brendan will be Waltzing to Paolo Nutini’s ‘Last Request’.

Reaction: All pretty good dance wise although I’m not that keen on most of the songs. I’d not heard of Mark and Karen’s song before, but on checking it out it could be a good choice. The song for Pixie is listed as “Sparkling Diamonds” on the BBC site but since it is basically “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” that’s what I’ve put it as.

Strictly week 8 songs and dances revealed

  • Caroline and Pasha will be performing the Jive to 'Crocodile Rock' by Elton John.
  • Frankie and Kevin will be performing the Quickstep to 'A Town Called Malice' by The Jam.
  • Jake and Janette will be performing the American Smooth to 'Feeling Good'.
  • Judy and Anton will be performing the Viennese Waltz to 'Let's Go Fly a Kite' from the musical Mary Poppins.
  • Mark and Karen will be performing the Charleston to 'We No Speak Americano' by Yolanda Be Cool.
  • Pixie and Trent will be performing the Paso Doble to 'The Eve of War' by Jeff Wayne.
  • Simon and Kristina will be performing the Argentine Tango to 'El Tango De Roxanne' from the film Moulin Rouge.
  • Steve and Ola will be performing the American Smooth to 'Rolling in the Deep' by Adele.
  • Sunetra and Brendan will be performing the Samba to 'I Don't Feel Like Dancin' by Scissor Sisters.

My reaction: I think those aren't bad apart from Steve's American Smooth and Sunetra's samba, particularly the American Smooth. Rolling in the Deep isn't remotely smooth or Hollywood. Jake's music by contrast is miles better. Also, I will be surprised if Judy doesn't come flying in as Mary Poppins avoiding as much dancing as possible!

Strictly week 7 songs and dances revealed

Alison and Aljaz will be performing the Charleston to Friend like Me by Robin Williams, from the film Aladdin.

Caroline and Pasha will be performing the Waltz to Three Times a Lady by The Commodores.

Frankie and Kevin will be performing the Samba to La Bamba by Connie Francis.

Jake and Janette will be performing the Rumba to Strangers in the Night by Frank Sinatra.

Judy and Anton will be performing the Paso to I Fought the Law by The Clash.

Mark and Karen will be performing the Waltz to Weekend In New England by Barry Manilow.

Pixie and Trent will be performing the Foxtrot to When I’m Sixty Four by The Beatles.

Simon and Kristina will be performing the Quickstep to I Got Rhythm by Bobby Darin.

Steve and Ola will be performing the Paso to Use Somebody by Kings of Leon.

Sunetra and Brendan will be performing the Foxtrot to All of Me by John Legend.

Reaction: Having checked some of the songs out. Waltzes, Foxtrot and Quickstep fine. Rumba should be o.k. and I love the song. Charleston not sure about that one. The samba song surely is more a salsa song. The Pasos, not great. Judy and Anton dance to The Clash OMG!!!
