My thoughts

Jay. Passable Cha Cha, but Aliona did a lot of show moves to mask lack of technique. A mid tabler.

Kirsty. Got through it but basically placed and pushed by Brendan. Managed the pivots O.K. Maybe Latin may be better for her. Inappropriate music probably didn’t help as “Vincent” isn’t really suited to a waltz.

Jeremy. This year’s underdog. What he lacks in dance skills he makes up for in attitude and gusto. Could avoid early eviction if he keeps up the performance aspect.

Georgia. Another contender. Did very well with a very fast jive.

Ainsley. Dancing a tango to a disco number would be difficult for anyone and Ainsley did a reasonable job. His energy and performance is good and should see him through the first few weeks.

Katie. Anton finally gets someone who can dance! Lovely jive by both of them!

Loads of jokes about this. Len saying Anton might now realise Strictly goes up to Christmas!, Claudia saying they all get on the bus to Blackpool and Anton says “right, it’s over then”. Anton “I just normally lift them up and chuck ’em. What’s all this (does jive steps) about?!”. His delight at getting 26 points all in one go “It normally takes weeks of accumulated numbers!”

Iwan. Could be in danger of an early exit. A bit stompy.

Jamelia. Despite saying she’s a giggler, I think she will suffer nerves more than she lets on. Struggled a bit with the technique of the waltz. She could be better at the Latin dances.

Peter. The best guy by far. Good rhythm, musicality and performance.

Dance of the night

Peter and Janette’s tangoesque Cha Cha topped the leaderboard and was the best dance of both nights, but it was a joy to see Anton dance with a partner who can dance, so unapologetically I give you both dances!

Verdict
.
There is now a distinct possibility that Anton could get to the final! Katie has style and grace and can dance!
Peter is on his own for the guys, the ladies have more contenders. Georgia, Helen, Katie and Anita are the top flight ladies with Kellie close behind.
Mid tablers are Ainsley,Jay,Jamelia,Kirsty,Anthony
Lower tablers, Carol, Daniel, Jeremy,Iwan
..
As always, some lovely moments in the Clauditorium especially with Anton’s reaction to a very well executed and received jive!

The competition begins in earnest next week as the first couple go home.

My thoughts

Very strong opening dance by Kellie. One to watch.

Anthony, a rather flat footed jive, but rhythm pretty good.

Helen. A lovely waltz with great musicality. A potential finalist.

Carol. Lovely personality but sadly not a great dancer. Forgot her steps.

Daniel. Surprisingly good. The waltz tends to suit the older gents as they can look very elegant. Musicality good.

Anita. Great jive. Great rhythm, great musicality and good hip and arm action. Another potential finallist.

Dance of the night

Helen was top of the leaderboard and did a beautiful waltz but, for me, the best dance of the night was Anita and Gleb's Cha Cha. Full of fun, rhythm and musicality, Anita encapulated the spirit of the dance and showed that she is definitely one to watch. Can she do as well as fellow One Show presenter, Matt Baker, a few years back when he made the final? I wouldn't bet against it!

Dress of the night

I will award this to Helen George's elegant apricot waltz dress, but there is a bit of a rider here. Kirsty Gallacher isn't dancing till tomorrow so I wanted to award this to someone dancing on the night.
So here is Helen's dress first.

.
Aljaž is delighted to get an 8 and twirls Helen around. Great view of her dress again.

..
Kirsty Gallacher's golden dress was simply stunning. Seen below second on the left.

Verdict
.
Some real contenders in this first show. Anita, Helen and Kellie should be staying in the competition for the long haul.
Enjoyable show but surprised there was no pro dance. I assume this is being saved for tomorrow. The relaxed partnership between Tess and Claudia is great and makes for a fun atmosphere.
Welcome back Strictly!
