Newzoids, a welcome dose of satire

Image. ITV.
So, there’s a new topical, satirical show puppet show on our screens. It’s been a very long time since Spitting Image and something similar has been long overdue.
The first episode aired last week and had some good moments such as Andy Murray with a brilliant monotone voice, Ed Milliband eating a bacon sandwich as part of a Bushtucker trial for votes, Olivia Coleman in Broadchurch greeted by Peter Capaldi instead of David Tennant because he’d regenerated, and the song by Gary Barlow entitled ‘Money in the bank’, but didn’t seem quite like it had found its feet yet.
This week’s episode was much better and had loads of good stuff. Ed Milliband on Embarassing Bodies, Boris Johnson teaching Cameron and Osborne how to be a clown, Nicola Sturgeon singing like “Like a Sturgeon” and dating Ed Milliband, Katie Hopkins prostituting herself to say the vilest things for money and Nigel Farage’s song about being a common man (with a heckling version of himself disputing it!)
The best skits feature Jeremy Clarkson. The show began last week with him taking Anger Management classes but this week had an indoctrination ceremony (see picture above) where The Duke of Edinburgh hands over to Jeremy Clarkson as “Offender of the Realm” and was very funny, especially the line from Clarkson “You hit me for no reason, you’re my kind of guy!” .
The show features the vocal talents of Jon Culshaw, Debra Stephenson, Lewis MacLeod and Simon Greenall, who voices Vladimir Putin, but you may probably recognise a certain meerkat in those Russian tones!
It’s very topical, with more hits then misses and is definitely worth checking out.
Newzoids airs on Wednesdays on ITV at 9pm, and is available on ITV player. The programme can contain strong language.
